Freelancing for Dayton City Paper

Something that I lack is connections in the field of journalism. So, when I returned home for winter break, I emailed a publisher that I had met a few months back at the Dayton Runway Festival. I knew it was time to start reaching out to people, and I also really needed to work on my single images portfolio. Since I work for athletics at school, I have so so so many opportunities to shoot sports, but that means my editorial shooting has taken a hit.

After contacting the publisher at Dayton City Paper, an arts and entertainment weekly publication, I was able to come in for a visit at their office and take on some freelance assignments. The first thing that I've been working on is a few images to supplement a story on Trivia with a Twist, a comedic trivia night that is hosted several days of the week at various restaurants and pubs in the Dayton, Ohio, area. I was happy to take on the assignment - but nervous as always. I've really been working on my confidence as a journalist but each assignment presents me with new challenges.

The first trivia night that I shot was at a restaurant, so I felt a little funny taking photos of people while they were trying to eat and play trivia. People tend to shy away from the camera, and I was intruding in their space. I got some "okay" images from that night, but left the shoot feeling somewhat discouraged. After talking with a friend, I was provided with some good advice. My friend just advised me to walk in there and shoot, to go in there and just start taking pictures because "these moments will never happen again and you're the eyes for hundreds, thousands, millions of people." That really brought things in perspective for me. The next shoot I went to - I walked in with confidence, and it really influenced how I interacted with people. The second challenge was shooting in the confines of the restaurant - not a lot of room to move around and dark, dark lighting. I was able to make it work, I think, but nevertheless, it was a challenge.
